The Failure of Shringi Rishi to Attain God in the Treta Yuga

The Failure of Shringi Rishi to Attain God in the Treta Yuga

Tretayug witnessed several great events and acts of esteemed luminaries, sages, and saints who adopted various ways and means to attain God. In their quest to attain immortality, performing intense austerity/ Hatha Yoga/ meditation in forests was foremost, which is revealed from the facts mentioned in holy books of the Hindu religion. They believed that winning over the mind and restraining the senses leads to the attainment of God; hence, sages at that time used to perform some Yoga postures like Chanchari, Bhuchari, Agochari, Khechari & Unmani mudras (gestures).

Due to a lack of true spiritual knowledge, their attempt in doing so proved to be an utter failure as God was not attained rather those gestures (mudras) landed them in gaining some accomplishments with which they got fame but failed to attain salvation and remained a prey to Satan Brahm Kaal and could never be liberated from the vicious cycle of birth-rebirth. The common people used to count them in the category of great men striving hard for God.

For such seekers who pretend to be great ascetics, it has been mentioned in Sachhidanand Ghan Brahm's nectar speech

Dumb kare dungar chadhe Antar jheeni jhool|| Jag Jane ye bandagi Kare ye bove shool babool||

In this connection, we will bring face-to-face the true story of a renowned sage Rishyasringa/ Shringi of Tretayug who aspired to attain God, performed Hatha Yoga meaning practiced khechari mudra and perfectioned Amrit Kriya thereby awakening Kundalini Shakti with the intention to nullify the effect of senses and control mind to attain God but failed miserably as his conduct was arbitrary.

In the absence of the guidance of an enlightened saint, instead of attaining emancipation, Shringi Rishi finally remained trapped in the web of Kaal and miserably wasted his precious human birth.

On the basis of the following, let us proceed to understand the whole story of Sage Shringi, as how butcher Brahm Kaal deceived a naive seeker and ruined his precious life.

  • Who was Rishyasringa/ Shringi Rishi?
  • What are Amrit Kriya, Kundalini Shakti, and Khechari Mudra?
  • What is Sahaj Samadhi and swans Kriya?
  • Who was the wife of Rishyasringa/ Shringi Rishi?
  • Role of Shringi Rishi in the birth of Shri Ramchandra
  • Shringi Rishi was afflicted with five  disorders
  • Who would have provided emancipation to Shringi Rishi?

Note: The reference has been taken from the nectar preachings of enlightened sant Rampal Ji Maharaj and ‘Andh Shraddha Bhakti Khtra-E- Jaan' book written by him on page no. 65.

Who Was Rishyasringa/ Shringi Rishi?

The great ascetic Rishyasringa/ Shringi was the son of Rishi Vibhandak from the Kashyap lineage.  Rishi Shringi was well known during the Treta Yuga as one accomplished man who performed severe austerity to attain salvation, thereby perfecting Amrit Kriya (Nectar drinking).  He awakened Kundalini Shakti/ divine serpent power/ Nagini Shakti (blooming of Navel Lotus).

In his attempt at self-realisation, Shringi Rishi achieved unassuming yogic powers like surviving on a meagre diet. The flow of nectar inside his body was sufficient to satiate him for the entire day. He believed that God is attained by killing instincts; hence, he performed meditation/ Hatha Yoga to control the mind, which is impossible by the arbitrary worship done in Kaal’s realm.

God Kabir says

Mun ke mate na chaliyo, ye mun hai pucca doot|| Aur le doobe dariya mein,  jaa  haath se choot|| Vikar mare mat janiyo jo bhoomal mein aag||

The son-in-law of Ayodhya King Dasaratha, Shringi was deceived miserably by Kaal who distracted him from doing worship to attain God and trapped him in the family way by aggravating vices in him like lust,  greed and affection due to which he lost a precious human birth and could not attain God.

Moving ahead, first, we will brief you about

  • What is Amrit Kriya?
  • What is Khechari mudra?
  • How is Kundalini Shakti awakened?

Note: Trinity God’s Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva practised the same as mentioned in Sachhidanand Ghan Brahm's speech

Shabd Rarankar Khechari mudra daswein dwar thikana ||

Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh aadi lo Rarankar pahichana ||

What are Amrit Kriya, Kundalini Shakti, and Khechari Mudra?

Amrit Kriya is a yoga practice performed by seekers to awaken Kundalini Shakti (the awakening of inner energy). For this, they do Hatha Yoga and practice Khechari Mudra.

The human body is God's best creation. Naturally, the body creates nectar (Amrit), which is filled in a very small vacuum placed above the palate. The nectar flows down and drops in the navel, which is automatically consumed by the Serpent like a bunch of nerves with raised hoods covering the navel lotus.

While practising Khechari Mudra, the yoga practitioner sits in a straight backbone posture. The tongue is rolled up back to the tip of the palate. There are nerves interconnected with the crown of the head (Sahansra Kamal) till the navel lotus. Practising to stay in this position for a long time loosens the nerves of the navel, which are usually in an erect position like the hood of a snake.

With Khechari Mudra, the nectar manifests through the tip of the palate and via the navel, it circulates in the entire body. This is how Kundalini Shakti is awakened. As a result, the seeker gains accomplishments and can survive on a meagre diet. They believe they have controlled senses and, by winning over the mind, are ready in their journey to attain God.

In this way, the seeker experiences the Divine light and supernatural powers.

Note: Suksham Veda certifies that God is attained by Sahaj Samadhi, not by the above-mentioned arbitrary practice.

What are Sahaj Samadhi And Swans Kriya?

The supreme saint/ Tatvadarshi saint (evidence Gita 15:1-4 and 16,17) provides true salvation mantra Om-Tat-Sat (coded, evidence in Gita 17:23) Satnam and Sarnaam chanting, which the lotus chakras in the human body bloom automatically. This clears the way to reach to the 10th door of Kaal’s realm, heading forward to enter the 11th door to the realm of Akshar Purush and finally, entering to the 12th  door to the eternal abode Satlok having gone where the seeker never comes back to the mortal world of Kaal and attains complete salvation.

This is the right way to attain God certified in Suksham Veda. This is Sahaj Samadhi.

Important: Instead of doing Sahaj samadhi, Shringi Rishi awakened Kundalini Shakti by perfectioning Amrit Kriya, practising Khechari Mudra; therefore, he remained deprived of attaining salvation. He did force worship/ Hatha Yoga.

Who Was The Wife of Rishyasringa/  Shringi Rishi?

Shanta, the daughter of King Dashrath of Ayodhya in the Treta Yuga, was the wife of Rishi Shringi. She was the elder sister of Shri Ramchandra.

Moving ahead, we will read how both of them got into a relationship.

Love Story of Shringi Rishi/ Rishyasringa and Shanta

There is a description of Shanta in the chapter “Baal Kand” of the Ramayana written by Shri Tulsidas Ji. In the couplets, at the time of the marriage of Shri Ramchandra, the ladies from the bride's side, while narrating Yang (Seethed), have told that 'Ram Ji! Did your sister Shanta run away with Sage Shringi, or did she marry? The marriage is done in a similar caste. Shringi Rishi/ Rishyasringa is Brahman.

Example:- Shringi Rishi performed intense penance by restraining senses intending to control vices like lust  (sex), anger, affection, pride and greed and accepted that I have controlled all five disorders viz: beauty, taste, smell, touch, sound.

He used to lick the bark of a tree once a day. He used to be satiated with it. Once, Shringi Rishi sat facing a tree in a Jungle near Ayodhya to showcase the power of his devotion. Ten days have passed. The religious people of Ayodhya prepared delicious food like kheer and halwa to feed the sage when he wakes up from meditation. But Shringi Rishi used to lick the bark of the tree with his tongue once a day. He does not open his eyes and continues to meditate.

The discussion about the sage spread like fire in Ayodhya city. King Dashrath got to know and went along with his daughter Shanta and the Queens to have the audience of Rishi, but the sage did not open his eyes. He only licked the tree with his tongue. Many days have passed like this.

Shanta, the daughter of the King, was young. By that time, Shri Ramchandra and the other sons had not been born. After the birth of Shanta from Queen Kaushalya, no child was born for 20 years to any queen.

Shanta started going for the audience of Rishi Ji every day along with her maid servants after taking permission from her father, Dashrath Ji. Shanta asked a Physician how to wake Rishi Ji from meditation. Tell me that procedure

The Physician told that to apply honey on that part of the tree where the sage licks. Shanta did the same.  Earlier, the sage used to lick once; that day, he licked twice. The next day, again, the honey was applied. The sage licked four times. The honey was applied on the third day again. The sage licked for a long time and opened his eyes.

He looked in front. Shanta introduced herself and requested him to eat food. The sage ate some Kheer.

King Dashrath requested Shringi Rishi to come to his palace. The sage gave consent. The King made Shringi his guru. Daughter Shanta was told to serve the sage. Shanta used to get the food cooked by her maid servants and used to go and feed the sage. She used to discuss the Almighty for a very long time.

Rishyasringa/ Shringi Rishi put the proposal in front of King Dashrath to marry him to Shanta. The sage was aged 40, and Shanta was aged 20. King Dashrath was a Kshatriya, and Rishi Shringi was a Brahmin, due to which King Dashrath was in a dilemma. If he were to deny, then the sage might curse. If he agrees, then the people of his caste would raise objections.

One sage gave a solution to King Dashrath. That Brahmin sage adopted Shanta. Then got married. Both went to the forest and started living in a hut thereafter.

Role of Shringi Rishi In the Birth of Shri Ramchandra

Later, King Dashrath requested the Shringi Rishi for a child. The sage suggested organising a religious ritual (Putrakameshti Yagya) to obtain a son and said that 'If I only perform that Putrakameshti Yagya, then you will surely get a son'. The Yagya was decided to be done after six months on an auspicious time. Then Lord Ram, Bharat, Shatrughan and Laxman were born.

Shringi Rishi Was Afflicted With Five Disorders

Holy Gita Chapter 4 Verse 26 states that ‘some seekers say only those who have suppressed their senses attain liberation’. Shringi Rishi did austerity in the forest with the same purpose and had accepted that he had controlled his senses. Therefore, he started demonstrating his importance by sitting near Ayodhya city, but miserably failed.

It has been mentioned in Suksham Ved:

Kurang Matang Patang Shrang aru Bhrangi, Indri ek thagyo tis anga।

There are five disorders. {Sound, touch (sex), beauty, taste, smell}.

God Kabir explains in Suksham Ved that ‘those seekers who act arbitrarily according to their whimsical desires and suppress their instincts and consider it only to be their spiritual achievement and success are simply confused due to a lack of complete spiritual knowledge. These five disorders are present in every human being.

Tumhre sang pancho Prakasha। Yog yukt ki jhooti aashaa।।

'O human (Female-Male)! You have a strong effect on all five disorders. Therefore, you make a useless effort to destroy senses, but you hardly escape from their ill effects. At that time, your arbitrary conduct to suppress senses proved to be an utter failure. Therefore, your hope of getting connected with the divine by doing worship contrary to the authentic holy scriptures was false. Shringi Rishi considered himself to be connected with the divine by giving up food and water.

It has been told in Gita Chapter 6 Verse 16 that 'that practice for the attainment of God is not successful of the one who does not eat at all, not of the one who eats a lot, not of one who does not sleep at all or one who sleeps too much’.

Shringi Rishi performed the activity of not eating or sleeping at all through Hatha Yoga.  He failed by not following the decorum taught in the Gita.

  1. Due to a taste disorder, Shringi Rishi started licking honey with his tongue.
  2. Due to the disorder of his eyes, which means seeing beauty, he became fascinated with Shanta. He forgot his purpose of devotion.
  3. Shringi Rishi was affected due to a sound disorder because Shanta used to happily wander outside the palace in a park and used to sing songs in a sweet voice. He was highly impressed by listening to her songs.
  4. Shanta used to apply fragrant oil. The sage got fascinated with its fragrance as well.
  5. The girl used to deliberately touch the sage, pretending to be unaware, due to which he got desperate for her. He forgot his purpose and married Shanta.

Ponder:-   What was the purpose of that year-long practice done to nullify the effect of senses?. It was useless. Shringi Rishi was considered to be the provider of salvation and the destroyer of sins. That was an outcome of his lack of spiritual knowledge.

The Supreme God Kabir has said that 'the senses are under the control of the mind. Unless the mind is controlled, controlling the senses is impossible. No practice can be successful.

Who Would Have Provided Emancipation To Shringi Rishi?

Almighty Kabir says the mind is controlled by true spiritual knowledge.  The knowledge that is lacking. Arbitrary worship is an obstacle to the attainment of complete salvation and getting rid of birth-rebirth and old age.

Almighty Kabir (Sachhidanand Ghan Brahm) Himself, by manifesting on earth, tells Tatvagyan from His Lotus-mouth through speech whose description has been mentioned in Gita Chapter 4 Verse 32 and 34.

Note: Evidence regarding arbitrary worship, which is useless in attaining emancipation, is also found in Gita 4:27-30 and 33. Along with daily recitation of holy scriptures, performing religious rituals (Yagya) is also said to be useless in getting rid of the illness of birth-rebirth.

The seeker who gets familiar with the true spiritual knowledge and does true devotion to the Supreme God Kabir, becomes sinless, therefore, attains Sanatan Brahm.

In Gita Chapter 4 Verse 32, there is an indication about the creation of Suksham Veda.

Had Rishi Shringi done scriptural devotion to Param Akshar Brahm/ SatPurush Kabir Sahib by taking refuge in an enlightened saint, he would have surely attained salvation.

Important: Almighty Kabir appeared as sage Muninder in Treta Yuga and played the divine act of an enlightened saint. All God-loving souls who came into His shelter and did true devotion of the Supreme God, the creator of the entire universe at that time, became eligible for the attainment of salvation.

Conclusion

The same Almighty Kabir (sage Muninder) is present on earth today in the holy land of Haryana, India, as Jagatguru Tatvadarshi Sant Rampal Ji Maharaj, who is providing true devotion and true salvation mantras. All seekers desirous of attaining salvation must take His refuge and save their precious human life so that none has to regret like Rishyasringa/ Shringi Rishi.
